Blending old-time roots with modern-day storytelling, The Western Thistles are an Edmonton-based folk duo known for their clawhammer banjo, rhythm guitar, and rich vocal harmonies. Formed in 2023, the project grew from the long-standing musical connection between Mark Boer and Sabrina (Bri) Huot-Boer, who came together to weld their talents for the sake of the song. Their sonic tapestry draws from folk, roots, and old-time traditions while remaining distinctly their own.
In 2025, The Western Thistles released their self-titled debut album, recorded live off the floor and co-produced by Miles Wilkinson (Guy Clark, Emmylou Harris, Darrell Scott & Tim O’Brien). The album reached #26 on the CKUA 2025 Top 100 Chart and #12 on CJSR’s Most Played Albums of 2025, standing as a testament to their commitment to crafting songs with heart, grit, and intention. Since its release, they have performed at festivals and concert series across Alberta, including the Blueberry Bluegrass Music Festival, the Edson Arts Council, and the Foothills Bluegrass Music Society.
